Whiteford's defense fights off the Aggies' attack in an important, 15-14 victory at Sand Creek.

All year long, coach Matt Garno and his staff have been telling the Whiteford Bobcats that football is mental as much as it is physical.

After Friday’s hard-fought 15-14 win over Sand Creek, Garno believes his team is getting the picture.

One of Whiteford’s cross country teams will need everything to go right to accomplish what they did last year. The other should be much improved.

Last year, for the first time in school history, the Bobcat boys’ team qualified for the state meet at Michigan International Speedway. But the Bobcats graduated three seniors, and one of the juniors left the team to play football.

Last year’s girls’ team also finished fourth in the TCC. But “Hoj” thinks much better things are ahead for the team this year.

As a freshman, Ashley Daniels qualified for the state meet at MIS.

One of the reasons why he’s optimistic about her improvement is because she’ll be pushed by freshman Rachel Fisher, who ran a half-marathon as an eighth grade student last year.

Coach Al Navarro wants his league back. And Lauren Yates, Brittany Holdridge and a fine group of young runners might just be the girls for the job.

After winning 13 straight LCAA titles, the Blissfield girls’ team has been shut out three straight seasons. Last year’s Royals finished a solid second in the LCAA. They also qualified for the state meet for the third straight year and 18th time in 19 seasons.

The Blissfield varsity baseball team saw its season come to an end at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights today. The Royals lost to Allen Park Cabrini 7-2 in the regional semifinal. Exactly one week after the Blissfield bats hit everything in sight while posting two 10-run mercy rule wins in the district, the Royals managed just four hits against Cabrini.

“Their pitcher had a lot to do with it,” said head coach Larry Tuttle, of Cabrini starter Trevor Hicks. ‘He kept us off-balance with that slider that he threw.”

Devin Suiter took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Eric Schmidt allowed five runs in four innings of relief.

Senior Hannah McEwan pitched a strong game but the Royals came up short in Saturday's season-opening 2-1 loss to Cabrini. Blissfield left a runner stranded on third in the bottom of the seventh.

The Royals weren't as sharp in the nightcap, making countless errors in a game that was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
