If there’s one thing that can be said about the Whiteford cross country head coach it’s that he’s definitely determined to keep his team on top. Last year, coach Jim Hojnacki led the team all the way to states and is looking to repeat the accomplishment this season.

Last year, head coach Katelin Smith took two basketball teams, Britton and Deerfield, and made them one. In its first season as a joint team, Britton Deerfield battled hard but had difficulty overcoming the lack of depth and couldn’t sustain defensive pressure over a full game. Still, what the team lacked in lungs and legs, it made up for in heart and hustle. And in her second year as coach of the BD varsity girls team, Smith expects her team’s character to shine.

Under first-year head coach D.J. Lutz last year, the Britton-Deerfield varsity football team won their first two games. But the Patriots ran into the Tri-County Conference and never won another game.

Entering his second year, Lutz isn’t measuring his season in wins and losses. At this point, it’s all about developing a program.

The numbers are still on the low side, with 24 kids playing varsity and another 21 on junior varsity. It’s a young varsity team, too, with just six seniors. There aren’t many returning senior starters, so Lutz is looking from leadership from various players.

ANN ARBOR – At a scrimmage in Ann Arbor Friday, that team in the maize and blue uniforms with the winged helmets looked very familiar. But it sure didn’t look like the Bobcats.

Led by Matt Garno, the first new head coach since the 1980s, the 2010 Whiteford football program is undergoing major reconstructive surgery. Change is everywhere you look.

Most noticeably, it’s the appearance. Gone are the blue uniforms and white helmets. In their place are the new maize and blue uniforms and the University of Michigan-style helmets.

The Blissfield varsity baseball team saw its season come to an end at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights today. The Royals lost to Allen Park Cabrini 7-2 in the regional semifinal. Exactly one week after the Blissfield bats hit everything in sight while posting two 10-run mercy rule wins in the district, the Royals managed just four hits against Cabrini.

“Their pitcher had a lot to do with it,” said head coach Larry Tuttle, of Cabrini starter Trevor Hicks. ‘He kept us off-balance with that slider that he threw.”

Devin Suiter took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Eric Schmidt allowed five runs in four innings of relief.
