The Whiteford Bobcats kept their playoff hopes alive and a great Britton Deerfield comeback in the final Deerfield Homecoming football game Friday.

October 7, 2010

Blissfield falls to third place in the LCAA with its loss to Onsted.

The previous week, Royals football fans screamed for the Blissfield varsity  to pass.

At Onsted Friday, pass they did — successfully 10 of 19 tries, but four of those passes were intercepted and three of them led directly to touchdowns as the Wildcats claimed a 40-14 victory on home turf.

October 6, 2010

Eric May and Tran Longmoore preview Friday's varsity football games.

OK, so Summerfield and Hudson have their conferences basically wrapped up (watch out for Clinton, Summerfield). Now, it's all about the playoffs. Britton Deerfield needs to win out, a tall order with Summerfield still on the schedule. Blissfield needs to win two of three, and they should get the first tonight. Whiteford needs to win two of three, and it won't be easy because they've got Summerfield tonight. Last week, Eric May and I both went 5-2, missing the Blissfield and Dundee scores. So far, we're both 12-3.

Whiteford entered Friday’s game with a chance to solidify their playoff chances. Clinton was fighting for its life. And it showed. The Redskins (2-3, 2-1 TCC) scored 22 points in the second quarter to defeat Whiteford (3-2, 2-1 TCC), 38-19.

WHITMORE LAKE – Last year, the Britton Deerfield varsity football started with two wins and then went 0-7 in the Tri-County Conference. So after starting 2-0 this season, and then dropping two straight TCC games, the importance of Friday’s 44-12 win over Whitmore Lake is hard to over state.

“It’s been a long time since this program has had a league win,” said second year coach DJ Lutz, “so getting that one Friday was a stepping stone in the right direction.”

Even though Blissfield led for just over a minute of Friday’s matchup with Ida, it was enough — and came at the right time — to give the Royals a hard-fought 22-19 gridiron victory over the Blue Streaks.

In the first three-and-a-half quarters, Blissfield would reach scoring position repeatedly, but fail to punch it in all but one time, going into the half down 13-6.

Last week, Eric May and Tran Longmoore went 6-1 in their LCAA and TCC football picks. See what they're calling for this Friday night.

Blissfield (4-1, 2-1) at Onsted (4-1, 2-1)

Tran  -- Another tough one for the Royals. This game is even going to be tougher than Ida game, and they’re on the road. But I’m playing the homer card again and guessing that the Royals open up the offensive playbook a little wider to beat an Onsted team that isn’t quite as good as they’ve been in recent years. Eric May and I both went 6-1 with our TCC/LCAA picks. I got the Whiteford game wrong. Eric got the BD game wrong.

Whiteford's defense fights off the Aggies' attack in an important, 15-14 victory at Sand Creek.

All year long, coach Matt Garno and his staff have been telling the Whiteford Bobcats that football is mental as much as it is physical.

After Friday’s hard-fought 15-14 win over Sand Creek, Garno believes his team is getting the picture.
