The Britton Deerfield girls' varsity basketball team is going back to the basics in an effort to build a successful program. 

The Britton Deerfield girls' varsity basketball team is going back to the basics in an effort to build a successful program. First-year varsity coach Craig Tanis is hoping his young team can compete seriously in the Tri-County this year. The Patriots were 3-11 in league play last year and 6-14 overall.

The Blissfield Hall of Fame committee is beginning its 2012 Hall of Fame selection process. The committee is currently seeking nominations for the Hall of Fame.

If you believe someone (athlete, coach, support staff) is worthy of consideration, please take the time to make the nomination.  In order for an athlete to be considered, they must be out of school for 10 years.  For a coach or support staff, they must be retired from their athletic duties.

“We are young but quick,” Whiteford girls varsity coach Jay Haselschwerdt said about his team this year.

With only two seniors on the squad of 11 that also has one sophomore and a freshman on the roster, there is a lot of room to grow this year. But he is also expecting some solid leadership from his seniors this year as well.

Whiteford Schools has hired Jason Mensing as its new varsity football coach.

Whiteford Schools has hired Jason Mensing as its new varsity football coach. Mensing who most recently coached four years at Tecumseh High School was hired Dec. 19 by the district and will replace Matt Garno who resigned after the end of the 2011 season.

The Blissfield High School athletic department welcomed seven new members into the BHS Hall of Fame during a ceremony Saturday evening in the high school cafeteria. Seven people with diverse athletic backgrounds were inducted for their contributions to Blissfield sports.

A young but energetic team is what first year Britton Deerfield Patriot cross county coach Jay Yockey believes he has in the seven girls and four boys running for the Patriots this year.  For the first time in several years Britton Deerfield is fielding a full scoring girls team Yockey said there are four freshman one sophomore and two juniors on the team.

Blissfield cross country coach Al Navarro has a young team of girls to work with this fall, and the boys are three runners shy of the minimum number required to compete as a team.

First-year Britton Deerfield varsity volleyball coach Tim O’Brien said fans can expect to see a quicker offense when watching Patriot volleyball this fall.

Other than that he doesn’t expect to see too many changes to the young team of 11  players he coaching. Former varsity volleyball coach Michelle Bearinger was recently named athletic director for the school district.

Kilee Goetz is a very busy person. She just recently left Blissfield for Elon, North Carolina, after a visit with her family and friends, and is getting settled into her new apartment, new town, and, most of all, new job. 

 Kilee Goetz is a very busy person. She just recently left Blissfield for Elon, North Carolina, after a visit with her family and friends, and is getting settled into her new apartment, new town, and, most of all, new job. The 1999 Blissfield High School grad, on June 23, accepted an assistant volleyball coach position at Elon University, a college known for its top-shelf volleyball team.

The Blissfield Hall of Fame is announcing the Hall of Fame Class of 2011. Al Diver, Judy Beagle, Don Mulder, Carlos Santiago, Bud Friess, Adam Benschoter, Becky Martinez and Mike Newsted will be inducted on Saturday, Sept. 17 during the Hall of Fame Dinner.

Blissfield High School's competitive cheer team placed fourth at districts Saturday, Feb. 19, and will compete at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in regional competition in Mason.

The Blissfield Competitive Cheer team took first place at their meet in Leslie Saturday. 

The Blissfield Competitive Cheer team took first place at their meet in Leslie Saturday. There were eight teams with, four in their division. The Royals beat Vandercook Lake, Leslie and Parma Western.

"There were 8 teams total there, 4 in our division," said coach Amber Spotts. "We ended up beating Vandercook Lake, Leslie, and Parma Western. Vandercook Lake beat us a few weeks ago at Manchester but we were able to take first place by 11 points, finishing with a total score of 653.

Bleak was a good way to describe Whiteford’s chances of beating Madison on Jan. 11. Even on their home court the Lady Bobcats were, at one point in the second quarter, down 21-6.

“Victory,” coach Jim Ross shouted at his players from the sidelines during the game. “Victory,” he repeated occasionally throughout. The phrase must have inspired his players. Simply put: Whiteford was a force to be reckoned with.

Britton Deerfield basketball coach Darren Shiels knows it could be tough sledding for his Patriots team to start the season.

“With only two players returning there will be a learning curve. I know there will be a big improvement from the first 10 games to the last 10 game,” said Shiels, who coached BD last season and the Britton team for the four years prior.
