 Palmyra Township voters are going to the polls today, Tuesday, May 8, on a referendum on wind.

Palmyra Township voters are going to the polls today, Tuesday, May 8, on a referendum on wind. Voters will have the choice of upholding an ordinance passed by the township board last October regulating wind energy facilities or turbines in the township or voting to nullify the ordinance. Voters will cast a yes vote if they want the ordinance to remain as it is. Voters will cast a no vote to show their desire to nullify the ordinance.

OTTAWA LAKE — Joel Crozier, a senior at Whiteford Agricultural Schools, has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist.  

OTTAWA LAKE — Joel Crozier, a senior at Whiteford Agricultural Schools, has been named a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist.  More than 1,500,000 United States students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2010 and met other program participation requirements entered the 2012 competition for the National Merit Program recognition and scholarships.

No school Friday in Blissfield

School has official closed in the Blissfield Community Schools District for Friday, Dec. 2, 2011.

School has officially closed for Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, in Blissfield. This is the second day of school cancellation as a result of the closing of the U.S. 223 bridge after the second biggest River Raisin flood since records began being kept.

RIVER RAISIN 223 BRIDGE CLOSED!!!

UPDATE: 3:30 p.m. Wed., Nov. 30, 2011

BLISSFIELD - The Michigan Department of Transportation has shut down the bridge on U.S. 223 in Blissfield due to the flooding. As of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday MDOT has begun the process of  putting up detour signs. According to MDOT spokesperson Kari Arens, the bridge will remain closed until the water recedes.

Sept. 11 observed locally

Local observances of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania include the following events:

DEERFIELD — The Deerfield American Legion is resuming their pancake breakfasts at the Legion on the second Sunday of each month. 
WHITEFORD TOWNSHIP — St. Michael Lutheran Church in Whiteford Township will have a community 9-11-2001 Remembrance Ceremony on the lawn of the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. 
ADRIAN — Siena Heights University will begin a week of remembering Sept. 11, 2011, with an outdoor prayer service at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the flagpole in front of Sacred Heart Hall on the Adrian campus.

Hospice Run winds through Blissfield

Scores of sportswear-clad people were in the Blissfield High School parking lot early Sunday morning, looking bright-eyed and energetic as they awaited the start of the 29th Annual Hospice of Lenawee Run, Walk and Bike Tour in Memory of Bruce Jones.

      According to village administrator Jim Wonacott, the wiring for 
new LED street lights is taking place “as we speak,” and the new 
lights will be installed from the U.S. 223 bridge all the way down to 
Lena’s restaurant.

Village Buys Home Canning Property in Auction

Blissfield Village will soon take control of the 35-acre Home Canning property at East Jefferson Street and U.S. 223. The village was the highest bidder at an on-site auction Friday afternoon. The bid was $150,000.

Council made the decision to bid on the property after more than three hours of closed session discussions, including more than two hours of behind-closed-doors discussion at two specially scheduled meetings this week.

After the auction, Village Council President Jae Guetschow said the village planned to use the property for industrial development.

Feds Detail Alleged Hutaree Plot To Kill Cops

 DETROIT – A Blissfield area man was among nine members of a “Christian” militia indicted in United States District Court Monday on federal charges of conspiracy and attempting to use weapons of mass of destruction.

Joshua John Clough, 28, of Bruce Highway in Ogden Township, was a member of a militia group called Hutaree, whose website includes the motto, “Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive.”
