Ogden Township's interim supervisor and clerk earned their jobs for a full term Tuesday, Nov. 8, handily winning the seats they have held since being appointed after a recall of their predecessors. And Riga Township residents affirmed the wind ordinance approved by their township board.

Ogden Township's interim supervisor and clerk earned their jobs for a full term Tuesday, Nov. 8, handily winning the seats they have held since being appointed after a recall of their predecessors. And in Riga Township, voters said "yes" to reaffirming the wind ordinance their township board passed this summer.

In Tuesday's election in Ogden Township, Richard Marks won the supervisor's seat he has filled on an interim basis since his predecessor was recalled earlier this year over challenger Kevin DeCatur by a vote of 309-177.

RIGA—The effort to bring Riga Township’s recently approved zoning ordinance amendment to a vote was a success. The petition, circulated by pro-wind energy Riga residents, gathered more than twice the number of signatures required to put the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot. The results were certified by the Lenawee County Clerk.

The Blissfield Township Board and the Blissfield Fire Department may agree that the department has been one truck short for a while.

But they seem to disagree whether one should be purchased and, if so, what type of truck should be purchased sometime in the future.

Riga Township supervisor Jefferee Simon narrowly escaped recall by a 19-v0te margin, but his Ogden Township counterpart supervisor James Goetz as well as clerk Phyllis Gentz were recalled in Tuesday's recall elections in those townships.

Riga Township supervisor Jefferee Simon narrowly escaped recall by a 19-v0te margin, but his Ogden Township counterpart supervisor James Goetz as well as clerk Phyllis Gentz were recalled in Tuesday's recall elections in those townships.

The Riga recall vote was 268 yes and 287 no, leaving Simon in his post. There are 1060 registered voters in Riga Township with more than 52 percent turning out to vote.

In Ogden, 61 percent of the 746 voters turned out to oust Goetz by a vote of 253 yes, 203 no; and Gentz by a vote of 251 yes, 204 no.

In a special meeting last Wednesday night at the Blissfield American Legion, the Riga Township board finalized language on a zoning ordinance amendment regulating the development of industrial wind energy in Riga Township. There were cheers and applause from many in the audience when the board approved the ordinance proposed by the Riga planning commission with an additional restriction.

RIGA — The Riga Township board was caught off guard by a crowd of nearly 300 people that showed up for Thursday night’s special meeting at the Riga Fire Hall. 

The meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 6,in the Blissfield American Legion.

However, when more people came than the building could accommodate, the meeting was called off.

Two hundred tickets were distributed and 200 people were allowed in the Riga Township Hall for a meeting considering the proposed wind ordinance Thursday night, but a long line remained outside of people who couldn't get in as the crowd had exceeded the building's capacity.

The Lenawee County Election Commission unamimously approved the wording for a potential recall petition sought against Riga Township Treasurer Richard Beagle at a clarity hearing Wednesday. 

The Lenawee County Election Commission unamimously approved the wording for a potential recall petition sought against Riga Township Treasurer Richard Beagle at a clarity hearing Wednesday. This was the second time in as many months that Beagle was the object of possible recall petition.  Petitioner William Frantz of Riga will have 180 days to secure enough signatures to get the recall on a ballot.

RIGA — Thursday’s Riga Township planning commission meeting saw the Riga Fire Department’s main hall packed from wall to wall. Residents of Riga, Ogden, Palmyra, Sylvania and beyond gathered to discuss the proposed Blissfield area wind farm and hear about the zoning ordinance recently drafted by the planning commission that regulates the implementation of wind turbines in Riga Township.

RIGA – Near the end of the Monday evening Riga Township meeting, township supervisor Jefferee Simon made an announcement to all in attendance.

     “I got a call from the clerk Friday and a letter in the mail Saturday and I’m being recalled again,” Simon said.
