Blissfield man wins (Almost) May Day Run

Medal winners in the April 29 Blissfield River Raisin Festival Scholarship (Almost) May Day 5K Run are as follows:

Overall male winner and first in the 36-49 male category, Matt Dushane, who was first to cross the finish line at 19.59 minutes. 
Second overall was Jim Jordan who won the 21-35 male category at 21.31.
The overall female winner was also the third runner in: Heidi Bennett, who also won the 21-35 female category at 22.16.

Local man aids woman's escape from submerged car

BLISSFIELD - A young Sylvania woman is very lucky after escaping her vehicle that became submerged in water on Carroll Road near Silberhorn Hwy. where the River Raisin had come over its banks and across the roadway.

Village Vote: Candidates Talk About Downtown and the Economy

This week, we asked the village council candidates questions about Downtown Blissfield, the DDA, Michigan Main Street and the local retail and services economy. Presidential candidates Jae Guetschow and Mike Gunter, and Trustee candidates A. Ray Jones, Mark Burgermeister, Art Weeber and Andrea Cueto all took time from their schedules to answer these questions.

Over the past few years, despite the terrible economy, the local economy has seen its fair share of success stories. The opening of the new TLC Community Credit Union on the west side was a boon for town. On the east side, Dollar General opened a discount store.

Riga Residents Take In Wind Energy Presentation

RIGA — The Riga Twp. Planning Commission, in conjunction with the Riga Township Board, sponsored a presentation at a special meeting Monday night by John Deere, one of the corporations interested in developing wind energy. The program was part of the township’s effort to educate community members about the ramifications of allowing or prohibiting the construction of wind farms in the township.

The presentation was conducted by John Deere business development manager Doug Dulmering and consisted of a Powerpoint presentation explaining the effect that “wind farms” would have on residents.

Feds Detail Alleged Hutaree Plot To Kill Cops

 DETROIT – A Blissfield area man was among nine members of a “Christian” militia indicted in United States District Court Monday on federal charges of conspiracy and attempting to use weapons of mass of destruction.

Joshua John Clough, 28, of Bruce Highway in Ogden Township, was a member of a militia group called Hutaree, whose website includes the motto, “Preparing for the end time battles to keep the testimony of Jesus Christ alive.”
