The Blissfield Royals Varsity Baseball team claimed its 18th consecutive LCAA title.

The Royal varsity baseball club claimed its 18th consecutive LCAA
title last Tuesday in a makeup double-header at Dundee. The match was
split, but Blissfield clinched the title in round one to maintain its
status as the dominant team in the league.
In the opener, Blissfield defeated Dundee — the team that had beaten
Blissfield 12-1 in the District finals — by a nine-run margin. This
time the Royals were refreshed and recharged, rather than spent from
a three-hour battle in blazing heat. The defense was sharper,

MORENCI — If heart and hustle had been the deciding factors in Tuesday night’s basketball game, the Royals would have won hands-down. However, the victory went to the team that was able to focus and perform in the clutch.

Even though Blissfield led for just over a minute of Friday’s matchup with Ida, it was enough — and came at the right time — to give the Royals a hard-fought 22-19 gridiron victory over the Blue Streaks.

In the first three-and-a-half quarters, Blissfield would reach scoring position repeatedly, but fail to punch it in all but one time, going into the half down 13-6.

As the 2010 Blissfield varsity football season starts, making the playoffs for a fourth straight season isn’t on the radar of coach Ron Estes. And it’s not because this year’s Royals aren’t capable of it. It’s because Estes and his team don’t look that far down the road.

“It’s a very tough, long season. That first game against Sand Creek could determine whether or not we make the playoffs at the end of the season,” Estes said. “I see no reason to worry about six games until we have five under our belt.”

This year’s team is a talented squad. But it’s a young squad. The Royals graduated 22 seniors from last year’s team, which went 8-3 (3-2 in the LCAA, 3rd Place) in a season that ended in the district final against Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central. Numbers are down a little this year, with 26 players on the team.  And there are only 11 seniors.

SAND CREEK -- A young Blissfield team thoroughly answered any questions anyone might have had about its readiness for the 2010 varsity football season as the Royals downed the Aggies 22-6 Friday at Sand Creek.

Running behind an offensive line that featured three and sometimes four sophomores, the Royals pounded out 362 rushing yards. Senior Dalton Goetz led the way with 192 rushing yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Senior Eric Schmidt rushed for 76 yards on 11 carries and junior Josh Knorr rushed nine times for 56 yards. Schmidt also threw a touchdown strike to Knorr.

The Blissfield varsity baseball team saw its season come to an end at Bishop Foley High School in Madison Heights today. The Royals lost to Allen Park Cabrini 7-2 in the regional semifinal. Exactly one week after the Blissfield bats hit everything in sight while posting two 10-run mercy rule wins in the district, the Royals managed just four hits against Cabrini.

“Their pitcher had a lot to do with it,” said head coach Larry Tuttle, of Cabrini starter Trevor Hicks. ‘He kept us off-balance with that slider that he threw.”

Devin Suiter took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work on three hits, two walks and a hit batter. Eric Schmidt allowed five runs in four innings of relief.

The winner of the Blissfield Invitational baseball tournament won’t be decided until after the regular season.

Blissfield and Whiteford both went 2-0 in a tournament that started late because of field conditions caused by a heavy morning rainfall. Blissfield edged Grandhaven 3-0 in its first game, before beating up Dearborn in a 13-1 game shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

Whiteford won its first game, 14-13 over Dearborn. The Bobcats then came from behind to defeat Grandhaven 6-5 in a 10-inning thriller.
