WHITMORE LAKE – Last year, the Britton Deerfield varsity football started with two wins and then went 0-7 in the Tri-County Conference. So after starting 2-0 this season, and then dropping two straight TCC games, the importance of Friday’s 44-12 win over Whitmore Lake is hard to over state.

“It’s been a long time since this program has had a league win,” said second year coach DJ Lutz, “so getting that one Friday was a stepping stone in the right direction.”

BRITTON -- Clinton crashed Britton’s homecoming party Friday night, 34-13, in a Tri-County Conference game that leaves the Britton Deerfield Patriots at 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the TCC. The win puts the Redskins at 1-1 in the league for an early season lead. They stand at 2-2 overall.

The evening started out with the Patriots celebrating, as BD junior quarterback Andrew Prielipp air mailed two unanswered touchdowns in the first quarter, the first to senior tight end Josh Hoffman and the second to senior wide receiver Brady Southward toward the end of the quarter.

Under first-year head coach D.J. Lutz last year, the Britton-Deerfield varsity football team won their first two games. But the Patriots ran into the Tri-County Conference and never won another game.

Entering his second year, Lutz isn’t measuring his season in wins and losses. At this point, it’s all about developing a program.

The numbers are still on the low side, with 24 kids playing varsity and another 21 on junior varsity. It’s a young varsity team, too, with just six seniors. There aren’t many returning senior starters, so Lutz is looking from leadership from various players.
