Welcome to Blissfield, Michigan, home to the Blissfield Yuletide Cheer celebration that begins the second weekend in November every year as Santa makes his first stop in the area that Friday night for an old-fashioned tree-lighting and carol sing.

Yuletide. The very word conjures up visions of sugarplums in an old-fashioned setting; Christmas of yesteryear; candles; holiday cookies; Santa Claus and reindeer; shopping in quaint stores with clerks who handle each item with loving care and each customer with personal attention; the town Christmas tree; hot chocolate; trains. And yes, this year’s event is presented by The Old Road Dinner Train.

Visitors were plentiful to Blissfield’s Yuletide 2010 – Family Fun Weekend on Saturday. Customers strolled the streets taking advantage of the Christmas bargains and visiting Santa at the Depot. The trains arrived and departed on schedule from the many exhibitions both downtown and at the three residences where the public was invited to marvel at the miniature railroad layouts that some local master modelers have assembled in their homes.

The days are growing shorter and so is the time between now and Christmas. It is a time when families start bringing out the decorations that are traditions and looking forward to other holiday traditions. It is also a time when we might begin to look for decorations that will become traditions and gifts to put under the tree.

One of the best places to find everything for Christmas is an event that has developed a long history with Blissfield residents as a place to get the things to deck the halls and do some gift shopping at the same time: the annual Yuletide Craft Show, now in its 35th year.

The craft show will again be held in the Blissfield Elementary School, 640 South Lane Street, Saturday, Nov. 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shoppers are invited to come hungry. Besides the gifts and decorations, there is always mouthwatering baked treats and luncheon items to enhance the experience.

Of course, all of Blissfield will be in the holiday spirit this weekend, as the village throws its holiday gala with an art exhibit at Flatlanders beginning at 10 a.m., a Blissfield Model Railroad Open House until 4 p.m., A&B Railroad Train Rides until 2 p.m., and games and activities at Schultz-Holmes Library until 4 p.m.
