Schreiber named 2013 Teacher of the Year by Vocal Music Assn.

Whiteford educator Todd Schreiber is no stranger to the stage, but in his 25th year with the district, the spotlight has been cast on Schreiber as the 2013 Teacher of the Year by the Michigan School Vocal Music Association.

A graduate of Bowling Green State University with a bachelor’s degree in music education, and a master’s degree from VanderCook College in Chicago, Schreiber has served as the K-12 vocal music teacher at Whiteford for a quarter century, as well as the MSVMA district 12 co-manager for the past 11 years.

Along with his many accomplishments as an educator and accompanist, Schreiber is also a published author. His book, “Olympic Games for the Music Classroom,” was published by the Shawnee Press in 2008.

Direct rail route from Toledo to Adrian discussed

A direct short-line freight route from Toledo to Adrian could be a possibility. If funding can be secured, a railway linking the two cities could once again be a reality.

Some local government officials are discussing a potential move by the Adrian and Blissfield Railroad company to rebuild about seven miles of railroad track between Riga and Ottawa Lake that had been abandoned since the late 1970s.

Brenda Rice, representative from the rail line spoke at a special meeting of the Riga Township Board Jan. 21.  The rail line would essentially tie in the tracks in Riga Township near Silberhorn Highway to Sterns Road in Whiteford Township on what is now an abandoned line of the old Erie & Kalamazoo, the first railroad built in the area and often cited as the first railroad west of the Allegheny Mountains.

Blissfield Board of Education to attend council meeting

Members of the Blissfield Board of Education will attending the Monday, Jan.28, regular meeting of the Blissfield Village Council at 7 p.m.. Members of the board of education are attending the meeting regardin g discussions involving the possible construction of an addition to the school facilities that would also be made available for community use.

This meeting is a continuation of discussions that began when Blissfield Community Schools invited several community groups to the high school last fall for an informative meeting on the topic.
