WHITEFORD
Jan. 11, 2011
Bleak was a good way to describe Whiteford’s chances of beating Madison on Jan. 11. Even on their home court the Lady Bobcats were, at one point in the second quarter, down 21-6. It seemed as if the victory for Madison could be called early on.
But they weren’t down for long. Whiteford rallied, played strong and made a comeback.
The Bobcats dominated the rest of the contest to end up a 44 - 40 winner over a good Adrian Madison squad.
Becky Worden led all scorers in the game with 16 points and also added 5 steals.

In that game, Cheyanne McCartney led all scorers with 12 points and Mariah Dupree added 11.
BLISSFIELD

The Lady Royals continued to fill the “W” column by defeating the Hudson Tigers at home Friday evening.
“We got off to our best start of the year, jumping on Hudson early for a 19-4 lead,” said coach Ryan Gilbert.
Jamie Friess and Taylor Jacob took to the court with guns blazing, scoring 14 of the team’s 19 first-quarter points.
“Friess has done a great job ... giving us the spark we need and is gaining confidence each night,” said GIlbert.
The team played a focused and patient offense, carefully controlling the ball and waiting for good opportunities. Megan Knierim led the team in the second quarter, scoring six points while star player Celia Coopshaw was double-teamed by the Hudson defense.
At halftime the Royals led the Tigers 28-13. In the locker room they talked about remaining patient and not viewing the game as a runaway.
In the third quarter Blissfield out-scored Hudson two to one. The defense effectively shut Hudson’s offense down, led by Laura Goetz, who had four steals and several deflections.
Knierim continued to shine, racking up a season record of 13 rebounds. “Megan does all the little things for this basketball team and most of the time goes unnoticed, which is the way we like it,” said Gilbert.
The Royals sailed past the Tigers to a 44-22 win. Gilbert was thrilled with his team’s concerted effort.
“Everyone contributed tonight, and we are improving game by game, building confidence and looking for a huge win on Monday night against a very good Clinton.”
Friday’s victory brought the team’s record to 7-1.

The Blissfield varsity girls basketball team faced a much-improved Dundee last Tuesday. After an unexpectedly tough first half, the Royals adjusted and fought for a 52-40 victory.
“I think the girls may have gone in a little over-confident and didn’t realize it wasn’t going to be ‘same old Dundee,’” said coach Ryan Gilbert.
After a great 6-0 start, the Royals struggled to keep up with the Vikings. Celia Coopshaw helped Blissfield stay afloat, scoring eight of her 16 points in the second period. However, the team trailed Dundee 18-22 at the end of the first half.
“The halftime locker room was very quiet, and the girls understood we needed to come out with some intensity and turn this game around,” said Gilbert.
Dundee came out strong, scoring four quick points. Then the Royal defense turned it on, led by Laura Goetz and Jamie Friess. The Royals scored nine unanswered points to take the lead, which they never gave up.
“In the second half our offense started to roll as we made some adjustments at halftime to spread Dundee out and get Taylor [Jacob] and Celia [Coopshaw] in some pick and roll action,” said Gilbert.
Once the Royals had the momentum they did not slow down, outscoring the Vikings by five in the third quarter and seven in the fourth. The win brought their record to 7-1.
