Whiteford wins football playoff over Summerfield

The Whiteford Bobcats will be moving on in the 2016 MHSAA football postseason after dismantling the Summerfield Bulldogs 50-28, Friday night during the team’s pre-district contest played at Whiteford Stadium. Whiteford will host next Friday night’s district championship game against the Morenci Bulldogs, who defeated the Pittsford Wildcats in an overtime 27-24 game played in Morenci Friday night.

After a 22-22 tied halftime score, the Bobcats went on to outscore Summerfield, 28-6 in the second half to advance in the state division-eight playoffs.

Bobcat senior running back Jesse Kiefer scored five touchdowns Friday night and converted a two-point conversion, accounting for 32 of the team’s 50 points.

Blissfield Royals win a mud-bowl Homecoming

A rainy, muddy Blissfield High School homecoming was just what the doctor ordered for the Royals who defeated the visiting Dundee Vikings 20-6 Friday night.

Wearing their special black-and-purple uniforms with yellow outline numbers, it was impossible often to make out who made the hit or carried the ball for the winning cause, but hit and carry they did to earn a homecoming LCAA league victory.

Blissfield High School will celebrate its Homecoming Friday with a theme of Outer Space. A king and queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity football game with the Dundee Vikings at 7 p.m. A homecoming parade will also be held at 5 p.m. Class floats, the Blissfield High School Marching Royals and senior king and queen candidates will ride through Blissfield. The candidates pictured, starting with the queen candidates are from left, Natalie Smith, Jade Casanova, Lexi Clark and Erin Southward. The King candidates from left are, Jason Klauda, Lucas Waldvogel, Spencer Fisher and Noah Nieman. This week, students at Blissfield will celebrate each day with different homecoming themes. A Navy war veteran who hails from Astoria, Ore., has taken on another fight on his own, but this fight takes place on the land – not at sea – and his fight, which is for legalizing medical marijuana, was literally pulled through Blissfield today.

Fifty-eight-year-old Ras Ible, a self-declared “Rastafarian” is currently engaged in a 3,000-mile trek across the nation which began in California – all on foot – to raise awareness for homeless American veterans and to promote a possible future that would make medical marijuana available for those that may need it.

Updated noon, Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016:

BLISSFIELD – Preliminary reports on the death of a man found in the vicinity of a truck that had run through a North Blissfield Highway cornfield into a woods indicate  that Daniel Studnicka, 61, Blissfield, may have died of a medical issue, according to authorities.

F/Lt. Tony Cuevos of the Michigan State Police said an autopsy is scheduled for the victim early this afternoon whom he said had reportedly had a history of heart problems.

Death notice was made by Blissfield Police to his next-of-kin in Blissfield.

Authorities were called to a situation where a deceased person was found Tuesday mid-afternoon in the vicinity of a vehicle off the east side of North Blissfield Highway, just past the airport.

A local resident had alerted The Advance just after calling the authorities as he had noticed vehicle tracks through a cornfield earlier.

The Royals of Blissfield tasted the sweetness of success by spoiling Onsted’s homecoming Friday night, 12-0. It was their first win in almost two  years.

Meanwhile, Madison won its Trojan homecoming over Britton Deerfield’s visiting Patriots, 33-0.

And the Whiteford Bobcats clawed their way to a win over the Summerfield Bulldogs in a Cats-beat-Dogs 34-28 outcome.

BERKEY, Ohio — The Berkey Congregational Church along with the Metamora United Methodist Church hosts their annual Cobbler Wars at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at 12036 Sylvania-Metamora Rd., Berkey.  Those attending are encouraged to make their best cobbler to enter the contest. There will be prizes for sweetness, crispness and creativeness. Beverages will be provided and there will be entertainment throughout the evening. It is slated as a night of fellowship for friends and neighbors and an opportunity to sample as many entries as one wishes.
Donations are accepted at the door.


Summerfield firefighter honored posthumously

LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags to be lowered to half-staff Friday, Aug. 19 on all state buildings and within the state Capitol complex in honor of Terrence Raymond, a firefighter with the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department who died Monday, Aug. 15, according to a press release from the governor’s office.

“Terrence was a dedicated fireman and will be remembered for his service to the Summerfield community,” Snyder said. “I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends and community.”

Raymond was a volunteer firefighter for the Summerfield Volunteer Fire Department. He spent 12 years as a salesman for Airgas, and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Monroe.

A service in his honor will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 19 at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 222 Carey, Deerfield.

Lenawee County still has one district not reporting in County Commission District 3.  Most races have clear cut winner. At this time Anna Marie Anzalone has a big lead over both challengers to fill the remainder of the term in the Lenawee County Circuit Court. However, the vote count between Stanley Sala and Phillip Schaedler with Schaedler leading,  is close the top two will be on the General Election ballot in November.  The City of Morenci has not yet reported.  There are 1,671 registered voters. However, the county average is showing about a 15 percent turnout overall.

Koester wins Palmyra Republican primary for treasurer

PALMYRA – Matt Koester, with 121 votes, won the Republican primary for Palmyra Township treasurer in Tuesday’s voting. Leigh Ann Stucker had 65 votes and Joshua Leupold received 24 votes. There were also two write-in votes.
