  • Whiteford’s Lady Bobcats basketball coach Jay Haselschwerdt was a little concerned after losing top scorers Abby LaRoy and Caitlin Granata from last year’s squad. But the more he sees this year’s varsity hoops crop, the more he likes it.

    Last year, Whiteford was 10-10 overall and fifth in the Tri-County Conference with a 6-8 record.

  • Blissfield kicked off its 35th Annual Yuletide weekend tonight with a Santa Claus Parade and tree lighting ceremony. Several hundred people gathered downtown and then followed Santa and Miss River Raisin Tammy Korican as they rode a Blissfield Township Fire Department truck driven by Village President-elect and firefighter Mike Gunter to the Bachmayer Park Christmas Tree.

  • Blissfield Elementary School fifth graders saluted America's soldiers during Veterans Day ceremonies Wednesday at Palmyra Cemetery and Thursday at Riga Cemetery.

  • The young Lady Bobcats finished 17th in the 27-team field in the MHSAA Division 4 girls cross country state finals held at Michigan International Speedway this morning.

    Whiteford ran four freshman, two sophomores and a senior. Freshman Rachel Fisher finished 50th in a time of 20:36.9 to lead Whiteford. Sophomore Ashley Daniels finished 84th in 21:13.3. Freshman Grace Hojnacki was 133rd in 21.56.7. Freshman Clairisse Rickert was 178th in 21:10.7. Senior Taylor Kiefer was 204th in 23:57.6 to round out Whiteford’s top five. Also running were Sophomore Brandi Eischen, who followed Kiefer into the chute to place 20th in 24:03.7 and Freshman Devon Wilkerson, who was 214th in 24:35.7.

    It was Whiteford’s first trip to MIS since 2006.

  • Paced by freshman Tatyana Pless, who cracked the 20-minute mark for the first time, the Blissfield girls cross country team placed 21st in the MHSAA Division 3 Lower Peninsula State Finals at Michigan International Speedway this morning.

    Pless finished 61st overall in a time of 19:56.3

    She was followed in by senior Brittany Holdridge (143rd, 20:55.1), senior Lauren Yates (148th, 21:01.2), sophomore Meaghan Gunner (158th, 21:13.3) and freshman Brianna Yates (178th, 21:36.1). Also running for Blissfield were senior Autumn Owens (214th, 22:46.8) and Nina Lepaus (223rd, 23:02.3).

    Gunner’s time was a personal best.

  • The Lady Royals’ season came to an end at the hands of familiar foes at Dundee tonight. Blissfield was swept by Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in the district final, 25-16, 25-23 and 25-19.

    It was the sixth straight year the Royals were eliminated by the Kestrels.

    The Lady Royals from Blissfield face Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in Thursday night’s district final at Dundee.

    The game starts at 7 p.m.

    Blissfield pounded Erie-Mason 25-14, 25-6 and 26-24, getting contributions from all over the lineup.
