Sept. 11 observed locally

Local observances of the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania include the following events:

DEERFIELD — The Deerfield American Legion is resuming their pancake breakfasts at the Legion on the second Sunday of each month. The first breakfast will be this Sunday, Sept. 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Legion at 105 W. River Street.
The Legion will also take donations for the Deerfield Food Bank at the Light of Christ Catholic Church in Deerfield every Sunday.

WHITEFORD TOWNSHIP — St. Michael Lutheran Church in Whiteford Township will have a community 9-11-2001 Remembrance Ceremony on the lawn of the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. The service will last about 30 minutes and will include prayer, reflection, and music by several local performers. With this year being the 10th anniversary of the 9-1 terrorist attacks on the United States, the goal of the ceremony is to provide a means of honoring in a respectful way those who lost their lives that day.  All who desire to do this are welcomed and encouraged to attend. For more information please contact 734-856-2944.

ADRIAN — Siena Heights University will begin a week of remembering Sept. 11, 2011, with an outdoor prayer service at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6 at the flagpole in front of Sacred Heart Hall on the Adrian campus.
The service will mark the time of 8:46 a.m., the very time the first plane struck the World Trade Center that Tuesday 10 years ago. There will be 911 American flags placed on the site to remember the event, as well as information markers about that day and its aftermath. There will be song and scripture, with short reflections from both a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and a Dominican Sister from Iraq.
There will be praying for the victims, as well as for healing and peace. Those present will be invited to share written memories, prayers and reflections on special cards to be displayed around campus in the weeks ahead.
To complete the week, there will be a 9 p.m. Sunday Mass in St. Dominic Chapel. The public is invited to attend the Sept. 6 prayer service as well as Sunday’s Mass.
For more information on the prayer service, contact SHU Chaplain Father Tom Helfrich at 517-264-7198.
