Richard "Dick" Baldwin, Ph.D.

A. Richard “Dick” Baldwin, Ph.D., 93, died peacefully on November 28, 2011 at Fairview University Medical Center- Mesabi in Hibbing, Minnesota.  He was born in Palmyra, Michigan, to Arthur Tobias and Lovina “Bessie” (Ford) Baldwin on February 20, 1918. 

He received  a B.S. in chemistry from John B. Stetson University in Deland, Florida and Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh.  On August 8, 1941 he married his college sweetheart Eleanor Alida Warner.  They settled in Berwyn, IL where he worked for Corn Products, Inc. for ten years.  Then they moved to Minneapolis where he worked for Cargill, Inc. for 29 years.  He served as Vice President and Executive Director of Research and was a member of the Board of Directors.  He authored many scientific publications and held numerous patents in the field of fats and oils. 
He served as president of the American Oil Chemist’s Society and was the editor of the Journal of the American Oil Chemist’s Society and founding editor of the A.O.C.S. journal Lipids.  He was active in many scientific and agribusiness organizations.   He served numerous state and national agencies. He served on the Board of the Zamorano Pan-American Agricultural School in Honduras.  He was an active member of Grace Trinity Church in Minneapolis.
In the last few years they moved to Hibbing, Minnesota to be near family, remaining active in the Deer Lake Association and was on the Realife Cooperative Board.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years Eleanor, sister Lovina Turner; daughter Eleanor “Louise” Baldwin of Seattle; sons Arthur Christian “Chris” Baldwin (Dana) of Hibbing and Richard Lawrence “Larry” Baldwin (Jan) of Hibbing.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. December 22, 2011, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Hibbing, MN.  Memorials preferred to Camp Hiawatha- Voyageurs Lutheran Ministry or North Star Hospice.
