A more prepared, older and athletic Patriot football team is poised to take the field this year. A team with “no excuses” which is their mantra for the year. It is also a team with higher expectations of itself and a couple of lofty goals. The Britton Deerfield squad saw only six members graduate with last year’s senior class. However, nine of the 16 juniors on the squad saw significant playing time as varsity players last year as sophomores. This year’s varsity squad also has seven seniors and just three sophomores on the roster.
Third year head varsity coach DJ Lutz said he is “excited to go” with this year’s squad — especially since most of his players on the field this year won’t be all sophomores but will include a lot of juniors with a year of varsity play already under their belts.
While last year was more of a rebuilding year in the BD program, this year will be a year that hopefully will see the BD team in the top of the standings.
“They’ve been working hard,” Lutz said. With both practices and conditioning hours available this summer, Lutz said he averaged at least 44 of the 52 boys on both the junior varsity and varsity squad in attendance every day since the middle of June.
