Lauralee “Laurie” Ann Mlcek, age 73, passed away surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Charlotte Stephenson Manor of Adrian, Michigan. She went peacefully while under the care of Hospice of Lenawee County ending her long struggle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
Laurie was born in Detroit, Michigan to Gerard and Mary Magdalen (Olsway) Boff on March 17, 1938. She attended Mercy College of Detroit where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Education in the spring of 1960.
Laurie married Joseph J. Mlcek on June 25, 1960 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Adrian, Michigan. Laurie taught for several years at various schools including Prairie Elementary, Garfield Elementary, and Alexander Elementary Schools all in Adrian, Michigan, as well as King Road School in Sylvania, Ohio. She also pursued other career interests that included pre-school education, real estate and office administration for her brother’s dental practice.
Laurie was a loving, generous, and compassionate woman who enjoyed giving back to the community. She performed volunteer work for Bixby Hospital and Hospice of Lenawee County. She was a member of Light of Christ Catholic Parish (formerly St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church) in Blissfield, Michigan where she had taught 1st grade catechism and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. Laurie enjoyed writing and corresponding with her friends. She also enjoyed gardening, decorating, shopping, and traveling. Trips included travel to the east coast, west coast, Hawaii, Alaska and Europe. Her biggest interest and greatest love was her family, including her husband of 51 years, four children and eight grandchildren.
Laurie is survived by her husband Joseph J. Mlcek of Blissfield, Michigan, her three daughters Cindy (Rob) Britten of Adrian, Michigan, Laurie (Brian) Niederhauser of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Cheryl (Ross) Healey of Poway, California, her son, Rick (Paula) Mlcek of Monclova, Ohio and her eight grandchildren: Reece Britten, Jason and Jared Niederhauser, Tiffany and A.J. Healey and Chet, Charlie and Calvin Mlcek. Laurie is also survived by her brothers Richard (Dorothy) Boff of Adrian, Michigan and Michael (Kathy) Boff of Defiance, Ohio. Preceding her in death are her parents.
The funeral mass was held at Light of Christ Catholic Parish, 309 S. Lane St., Blissfield, Michigan at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 25.
