PALMYRA — George (Geo) VanNieuwenhze, age 97, of Palmyra passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2011, under the care of Hospice of Lenawee, surrounded by his family at the home on the farm where he grew up and raised his two girls and where he worked and cared for the land that he loved so much along the Raisin River for 86 years.
He was born July 27, 1913, in Riga, Michigan to Achiel and Alice (Van Daele) VanNieuwenhze. On June 6, 1942, he married Bernice Sadanowicz in Adrian. She preceded him in death on January 25, 2005. George had been a farmer all his life. He was a member of the Palmyra Presbyterian Church.
George is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Grant) Jacobs of Palmyra and Betty (Richard) Brighton of Lyons, Ohio; a brother, Camiel VanNieuwenhze of Adrian; three sisters, Clara Schwab of Adrian, Mary Houttekier of Blissfield and Mildred VanNieuwenhze of Adrian. In addition to his wife, Bernice, he was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; two brothers; and a sister.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 11, 2011, at 3:00 p.m. at the Adrian Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Bidwell officiating. Burial was in Palmyra Cemetery. Visitation was on Monday from 1:00-2:45 p.m. at the Adrian Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Home.
