Donald E. “Butch” Goetz, 81, of Blissfield passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 10, 2011 at the Bixby Medical Center in Adrian, MI.
He was born on December 21, 1929 in Petersburg, Michigan, the son of Ernest and Esther (Pries) Goetz.
On June 10, 1950, Butch was married to Marjorie Lipp. She preceded him in death in 1992. Recently, Butch was united in marriage to Carolyn Edwards Piotter on July 2, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Blissfield.
She survives.
Butch served his country as a United States Marine during the Korean Conflict era.
He was a farmer all of his life. Butch also worked at various jobs including, Revco in Deerfield, he drove truck for Haviland Co./Wilbur Ellis for 20 years and he also owned and operated Standard Oil in Blissfield for many years.
Butch was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga and also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Blissfield.
He was active in the Blissfield American Legion Post #325 and also the 40 et 8.
Butch loved to play cards in his spare time and looked forward to “road farming” daily to keep up on the area farmers.
Surviving is his wife, Carolyn Goetz of Blissfield; his children, Bruce (Judy Detzer) Goetz of Blissfield, Diane (Bob) Black of Blissfield, Mark (Janet) Goetz of Petersburg and Pam (Greg) Dozer of Sylvania, OH; three step children, Deborah (Dale) Grimes of Adrian, Peggy (Bret) LaFollette of Blissfield and Jackie (Todd) Southward of Blissfield; 2 sisters, Arlene Lipp of Adrian and Lucille (Norm) Peterson of Gobles, MI; 13 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with one on the way and 4 step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Marjorie, he was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, 2 brother in laws and a sister in law.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Butch Goetz took place on Friday, October 14, 2011, at 11:00 AM at the Wagley Funeral Home, Tagsold Chapel in Blissfield with the Rev. Paul Donelson officiating.
Burial followed in Riga Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Blissfield American Legion Post #325.
Visitation was held on Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the American Cancer Society.
