Bruce Jones Run in Blissfield Sunday

The 28th annual Hospice of Lenawee Run, Walk and Bike Tour in the memory of Bruce Jones takes place Sunday, June 27.

The event offers courses of one mile, five kilometers and 10 kilometers to runners and walkers.  There is also a non-competitive 50 kilometer bike tour. All events begin at Blissfield High School.

The registration fee for the bike tour and the 5 and 10K runs is $20. The cost for the one mile run is $10. Proceeds benefit Hospice of Lenawee, a non-profit, community-based hospice serving Lenawee County.

Last year’s event drew more than 300 participants and raised $7,000, said Sara Bingham, Director of Community Education and Development for Hospice of Lenawee. It is the organization’s largest fundraising event.

The event is named for the late Bruce Jones, a Lenawee County physician who became interested in the hospice movement, traveling to England to learn more about it. He brought back many of the ideas he studied and employed them in helping to found Hospice of Lenawee. He was killed in a vehicular crash in 1990.

It is the organization’s mission to provide end-of-life care to patients wherever it is they call home, whether it’s in a private residence or nursing home. The care takes many forms, including physical, spiritual and emotional care. Hospice of Lenawee also provides support to family and loved ones and offers bereavement service.

Funds from the Bruce Jones run are used for the organization’s general operations and are not connected to the Hospice of Lenawee capital campaign, which is nearly half-way to its $5 million goal. The organization hopes to erect a building dedicated to providing hospice care.

Registration and payment can be made online at www.hospiceoflenawee.org/events_form.php. It can also be done on the day of the event, beginning at 7 a.m. For more information call (517) 263-2323.
