Bruce Arthur Harmes, age 81, a lifelong resident of Lenawee County and of late, The Michigan Masonic Home in Alma died Thursday, September 29, 2011.
Bruce was born September 9. 1930 in Jasper, Michigan to John and Helen (Thielan) Harmes, who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Sand Creek High School and a long time employee of Consumers Power Company retiring in 1990. In his younger years, Bruce enjoyed hunting, fishing, water skiing and snowmobiling. He was also an avid private pilot and logged many hours in the air. Bruce served as a volunteer firefighter for the Palmyra Township Fire Department for several years and was a member of the Blissfield School Board in the 1960’s. He was a past Elder and Treasurer of the Palmyra Community Presbyterian Church and a past Master of the Palmyra Masonic Lodge.
Bruce is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Bowen) Harmes of the Masonic Home in Alma; sister, Opal (Leland) Humphrey of Columbia, S.C; 4 sons, Mike (Sue) of Crystal River, FL, John (Susan) of Blissfield, Jim (Ruth Anne) of Grand Blanc and Greg of Adrian; three grandsons, three granddaughters, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 1-3:30 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2011 at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian followed by a Masonic Service by the Palmyra Masonic Lodge F&AM#18 and a funeral service officiated by Rev. Robert Bidwell. Burial will follow in Palmyra Cemetery.
