Blissfield Blasts Erie-Mason, Will Face SMCC in District Finals

The Lady Royals from Blissfield face Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central in Thursday night’s district final at Dundee.

The game starts at 7 p.m.

Blissfield pounded Erie-Mason 25-14, 25-6 and 26-24, getting contributions from all over the lineup.

In game one, the Royals had three, four and five-point runs early to take a 13-3 lead.  Blissfield gave up two-point runs just twice in the game. Captain Ashley LaRoy and Laura Goetz each had three kills. Celia Coopshaw, Taylor Jacob and captain Zoe Brennan each had two kills.

The Royals were even better in game two. After Erie-Mason scored to cut Blissfield’s early lead to 6-2, the Royals went on a 13-point run with Coopshaw serving. She had two aces and a block during the run. Goetz had three kills during the streak and four on the game. Blissfield allowed back-to-back points just once in the game. Claire Denecker finished off Erie-Mason with a spike.

Up 2-0, Blissfield wasn’t as sharp in the third game.

“In those first two games, we were as focused as I’ve seen us all year. I’ve been talking to the girls about playing to their potential, and I think we did that today. They saw how good they could be,” said coach Sandi Porter.

Captain LaRoy said the Lady Royals needed to maintain their high level of play tomorrow against SMCC.

“We saw them today. They are a good team. If we come out and play to our potential and limit our mistakes – if we play like we did today, we can win,” said LaRoy.

Last year, SMCC defeated Blissfield in a thrilling five-game match at the Whiteford District final.
