About Us

    The Advance was established 137 years ago, on March 19, 1874, as a 
weekly newspaper called The Blissfield Advance serving the Blissfield 
village and surrounding area. As time went on, coverage began to 
expand to include Riga, Palmyra, Ogden and Deerfield. In the early 
1990s, Whiteford was also added as a coverage area and the name was 
shortened to The Advance.

    Owned by River Raisin Publications, Inc., which was founded in 1996 
by Publisher Marcia Loader, The Advance aims to provide interesting 
coverage and commentary of events in these communities each 
Wednesday. Award-winning reporting on local government, school news, 
sports and feature stories about unique activities of people in the 
area fill our pages each week. Our advertising design has also won 
many statewide awards, and we pride ourselves on providing our 
customers with a team approach to getting their message out to 
potential clients as well as their established customers.

    This website, www.blissfieldadvance.com, is an extension of our news 
coverage, though not a replacement for the newspaper. It is a way for 
people to keep up with highlights in our coverage area and to find 
forms and other services as well as products we offer.

    We remain committed to our weekly newspaper product and believe that 
in these days when larger, metropolitan newspapers may be finding 
challenges, that the weekly, community newspaper remains an important 
and viable source of information sharing as well as a source of 
leadership and perspective on issues of the day.
