Royals’ win is Vandecaveye’s 300th

The Blissfield Royals defeated Columbia Central 59-51 Friday night, Feb. 7. And, in doing so, they gave Coach John Vandecaveye his 300th coaching victory.

Weather update: 9:17 a.m. Feb. 5

The Lenawee County Road Commission is reporting near white-out conditions this morning (Feb. 5) as road crews work on getting the main roads clear. Road crews began plowing roads at 4 a.m. The county is now under a Level B snow condition yellow, which means road conditions are extremely hazardous with heavy snow and drifting conditions. Motorists are urged to curtail driving unless it is an emergency, according to Lenawee County Emergency Management coordinator Curtis Parks, who said the Level B will remain in effect until further notice.

Also, the Michigan State Police is out this morning with several vehicles stuck in the roadway in the area of U.S .223 between Driggs Road and Palmyra Road.

All Lenawee and Monroe county schools are closed for another day, due to the weather.



Weather advisories issued for area

The Lenawee County Emergency Management coordinator Curtis Parsons and Blissfield Village police chief Dale Greenleaf have issued weather advisories for the next 24 hours.

Parsons reports an accumulation of four to six inches of snow is possible this evening (Tuesday, Feb. 4-Wednesday, Feb. 5). A travelers’ advisory has been set in place beginning at 5 p.m. today and remaining in effect overnight. Drivers are urged to use caution as roadways become snow-covered and slippery.

Greenleaf has issued a snow emergency in the village of Blissfield effective midnight tonight and through midnight Wednesday. Any motor vehicle, trailer or moveable object must be removed from public streets and municipal parking lots. Vehicles in these areas are subject to being towed and ticketed in accordance with Blissfield Village Ordinance, Part 52, Section 52.013, Subsecton 2.5d(f). Winter update: Jan. 29, 2014

From Lenawee County sheriff Jack Welch and Lenawee County Emergency Management coordinator Curtis Parsons:

The “CONDITION YELLOW,” which has been in place since 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 27, has been lifted as of today, Wednesday, Jan. 29. A traveler’s advisory is in effect until today and tonight to alert residents that some area roadways, particularly secondary roads, are still covered in packed snow and, in some cases, ice patches which create hazardous driving conditions.

“In the extreme low temperatures we are currently experiencing across the county, salt brine is ineffective in removing snow and ice for road surfaces,” the release stated.


BHS sports rescheduling: Jan. 29, 2014

From the Blissfield athletic director, Steve Babbitt … due to school closings Monday-Wednesday, Jan. 27-29:

The JV / varsity women’s basketball home game scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29 vs. Hillsdale has been rescheduled (for the fourth time) to Monday, February 10.

The JV/varsity basketball games vs. Hudson which were set for Tuesday, Jan. 28 have been rescheduled for Monday February 17. The women will play at home and the men will play in Hudson.


Winter won’t loosen icy grip on region

Winter’s icy grip has taken hold of the Midwest and is not predicted to let go anytime soon. Record low temperatures, snow, and gusty winds have sent residents inside, caused local schools to cancel more than a week’s worth of classes and even contributed to propane gas shortages. As another round of winter storms wreaked havoc on the area Monday, local authorities were urging residents to use caution or stay off roads if possible.

Lenawee County Sheriff Jack Welsh and Emergency Management Coordinator Curtis Parsons issued a level B- Snow condition yellow effective as of 4 p.m. Monday.

New banners brighten Blissfield, thanks to young artists

The Blissfield DDA/Main Street partnered with art students at Blissfield High School to create new banners for travelers along U.S. 223.

Through this partnership, high school grade students of art teacher Rob Stranges at Blissfield High School painted their own designs on blank banners provided by the Blissfield DDA/Main Street.

“We had a number of blank banners just sitting in a box in storage,” said Patricia Rayl, DDA/Main Street director. “Thanks to Rob Stranges’ students, we now have nine new banners decorating our light posts along Adrian Street.”

Blissfield under 24-hour snow emergency

Blissfield Police Chief Dale Greenleaf has declared a snow emergency in the village of Blissfield beginning at noon Monday, Jan. 27. and concluding at noon Tuesday, Jan. 28.

This means any motor vehicle, trailer or moveable object must be removed from the streets by their owners or the  object may be towed and the owner ticketed.

 

 


Cancellations: Monday, Jan. 27

School was cancelled today (Jan. 27) in Blissfield, Whiteford and Britton Deerfield due to weather.
The Whiteford women’s varsity and junior varsity basketball game scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27 is canceled. No makeup date has been scheduled.

Blissfield Schools Monday, Jan. 27, athletic events – practices and games — are cancelled. The women’s JV and varsity  basketball game vs. Hillsdale for Jan. 27 has been rescheduled for this Wednesday, Jan. 29.

In addition, the Blissfield Athletic Boosters meeting scheduled for Monday night is also cancelled.


Essen, Barta BHS winter royalty
