Local women’s track competitors shone at the Addison Relays last Friday. The Whiteford women’s team placed third overall. Blissfield was fourth and Britton Deerfield placed seventh out of 11 teams.

BLISSFIELD

The Blissfield varsity golf squad shot its best team total of the year at the LCAA Jamboree at Deme Acres on April 22. The Royals took 7th place with a team score of 172. Dundee took the top spot with 160, followed by Erie Mason with 163 and Ida with 165.

Schiermyer returns to Lenawee County as Blissfield varsity football coach

After much anticipation, Blissfield High School has announced Adam Schiermyer as the next head coach to captain the Blissfield varsity football program. Schiermyer is no stranger to the area as he is a graduate and former football and baseball standout at Morenci High School and Adrian College.

Schiermyer will bring his experience and knowledge from years of playing along with more than nine years of coaching experience to the program. Schiermyer is leaving his post as a high school physical education teacher and head football coach at division-two Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

After only one season at the helm as varsity head coach, Schiermyer said his move to Blissfield was a pleasant surprise.

Blissfield names varsity football coach

Blissfield High School athletic director Steve Babbitt has announced that Adam Schiermyer is taking the reins of the Blissfield Varsity Football program.

Schiermyer, a high school physical education teacher  and head football coach at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley, Arizona, said he is excited to be returning to Lenawee County to continue his teaching and coaching career, Babbitt said. A graduate of Adrian College, he majored in physical education and played both football and baseball.

After receiving his degree, Schiermyer attended the United States Sports Academy, where he earned his masters of sport science degree in 2003. Before serving as head football coach at Bradshaw Mountain, he had been a teacher and assistant football coach at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, for six years, and at Highland High School, also in Gilbert, for two years.

Weather causes Whiteford postpones ballgames until April 23

Whiteford Agricultural Schools have postponed varsity baseball and softball games scheduled for Friday, April 19, due to the inclement weather. Both games have been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Whiteford.


Britton Deerfield athletic events postponed, cancelled due to weather

Athletic events scheduled for BD schools have been postponed and cancelled due to weather. Both the Britton Deerfield varsity baseball and softball games scheduled for Friday afternoon,
April 19, against Summerfield have been postponed until a later date. The junior varsity baseball game at Deerfield on Monday, April 22, against Sand Creek has also been cancelled. The Pittsford Invitational Saturday, April 20, that both the men’s and women’s track teams were scheduled to compete in, has also been cancelled.

This from Steve Babbitt, Blissfield High School athletic director, regarding BHS sporting events for April 19 and 20:

Freshman baseball has been cancelled for Friday at Milan and Saturday at St. Mary’s CC.

Varsity track has been cancelled for Saturday at Pittsford

Varsity softball vs. Notre Dame Saturday (home) has been delayed until 1 p.m.

Varsity baseball Saturday (Homerun Pizza Invitational @ home) has been delayed until noon

There is some activity still going Friday: varsity soccer at Adrian at 5:30 p.m. is on as is varsity golf at Ida, 3 p.m.

Blissfield Baseball

The Blissfield varsity baseball team swept its LCAA adversary Hudson Tigers 5-0 and 4-3 in a double-header April 9. The Royals rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the sweep and even their record at 3-3 on the season. Blissfield’s LCAA victory also sparked its pursuit of a 20th consecutive league championship.

Blissfield Women’s Track

The Blissfield women’s track team didn’t need the cold temperatures and light rain to help put the visiting Hudson Tigers on ice 85-43 April 10. The Lady Royals dominated nearly every event on their way to the double-digit win to open their season.

Blissfield Men’s Track

The Blissfield men’s track team was more than the Tigers could handle, as it took down the Tigers 85-28 to open its season.

April 13 sports events cancelled

Blissfield High School track athletes have been alerted that Clinton has cancelled its Saturday, April 13, varsity track invitational due to the fact their track in currently under water, according to Steve Babbitt, BHS athletic director.

In addition, the Saturday, April 13, varsity baseball at home and varsity softball games at Tecumseh have been cancelled, he said.

The Blissfield freshman baseball tournament at Plymouth has also been cancelled for Saturday.

Royals baseball season underway

It’s been all about gaining experience for a youthful Blissfield baseball roster. The Royals record stands at 1-3 following the Farm Bureau Invitational Saturday in Blissfield. The Royals fell to Flushing 9-1 to open the season last Thursday, and proceeded to go 1-2 at the invitational. Blissfield defeated Fenton 4-1 to open the tournament, but was defeated by Monroe Jefferson 6-1 and Saline 9-1 to round out the day. “I’m pleased with where we’re at. These young kids are really learning and competed well in all three games. We’re making big strides,” Blissfield head coach Larry Tuttle said.

Yockey earns key position in Boston Marathon lineup

Britton Deerfield middle school teacher and varsity cross country and men’s track coach Jay Yockey is lacing up his running shoes once again to participate in the 2013 Boston Marathon April 15. Yockey, a former Blissfield High School and Adrian College cross country and track standout, is joining a field of over 20,000 runners and putting his endurance to the test for the 26.2-mile trek. Yockey finished in ninth place at the Glass City Marathon in Toledo last April with a time of two hours and 48 minutes to qualify for the Boston Marathon. His qualifying time places him 908th in the corral-one, wave-one grouping, which is the first-division of runners behind the “elite” participants.

Dr. Kent Benham, Ottawa Lake, is also running in the fabled marathon.

Blissfield’s Denecker earns All-State mention

Blissfield junior Claire Denecker was named Special Mention All-State selection in women’s basketball. Special mention is considered second-team all state. She was also a unanimous first-team all-LCAA league selection locally.

Sophomore Emma Essen was a second-team all-league selection as a guard for the women’s basketball program in Blissfield. Senior captain Jordan Willson was an all-league honorable mention selection for the Royals’ men’s basketball team.


TCC trio land on All-State list

A trio of TCC standouts have received All-State recognition for their efforts during the 2012-2013 basketball season. Whiteford junior Colin Lake was chosen as a first-team selection for the second consecutive season. To add to Lake’s “grand” season, he also broke the 1,000 point career mark during his junior campaign.

Britton Deerfield’s Cambria Handy was named a special mention selection for the Class-C All-State selections, along with sophomore teammate Morgan Tanis. The pair of Lady Patriots were special mention selections which is considered second-team. Handy also added to her season success by breaking the 1,000-career-point barrier as a Patriot.


Whiteford men downed by home team

The home Monroe St Mary Catholic Central men’s basketball team took a 19-2 record, a home-court district advantage and disappointed the Whiteford Bobcats 70-49 in the second game of the evening Wednesday, March 6.

SMCC will face Summerfield for the district crown Friday night on the SMCC floor.


Season ends for Blissfield men’s basketball

The second round of men’s basketball district play marked the end of the season for the Blissfield Royals, who lost to Summerfield Wednesday, March 6,  61-49 at SMCC.

The Royals had earned their way into the district semis after a one-point victory over Britton Deerfield in opening action Monday night.


Royal women lose regionals basketball opener

Adrian Madison ended the Blissfield Royals playoff run Tuesday night, March 5, 2013, as the Lady Royals found themselves on the short end of a 43-33 score in thewomen’s basketball regional opener in Hudson.

The Royals had clinched their district title Friday night over the Whiteford Lady Bobcats.

Royals start men’s districts with one-point win over BD

MONR0E – One thing that is guaranteed when the Blissfield Royals and the Britton Deerfield Patriots men’s basketball teams play a game fans wiill be on the edge of their seats until the very end.
Once again Blissfield was victorious over the Patriots by a score of one, defeating them 48-47 in the clock ran out in overtime Monday evening in the first round of district play.
In a game that went back and forth from the beginning it came down to who had one last play in the end and Blissfield capitalized on a missed freethrow attempt by Jordan Osbun and Felipe Cazares scooped up the rebound and dribbled down the court and made the layup to get the win.

Royal women win district basketball championship

The  Blissfield Royals will advance to regional play this week after defeating the Whiteford Lady Bobcats Friday night on their home floor, 39-26.

The Lady Royals, though having trailed early, led Whiteford 24-18 at halftime, then continued on for the women’s basketball district championship.

Blissfield’s Thompson fourth in state

Thompson won the three matches leading up to the fourth-place finish in triple time.

Blissfield High School’s Dylan Thompson won his first match in the MHSAA state wrestling finals Thursday afternoon by a pin in the second period.

He will face his next opponent at 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

 


Blissfield, Whiteford women to square off in finals

The Blissfield High School women’s basketball team defeated the Britton Deerfield Lady Patriots 56-46 in round two of district action at Blissfield Wednesday, Feb. 27.

BD had arrived at the second round after winning Monday night, but Blissfield had drawn a first-round bye.

Whiteford’s Lady Bobcats downed the SMCC Kestrals in game two Wednesday, 60-50, to advance to district finals Friday night. Whiteford had won their round-one game Monday.

The Royals will face off against Whiteford in the district finals at Blissfield High School Friday night for the championship.

Cueto first-ever Blissfield bowler to go to state

Blissfield athletic history was made Saturday as Royal varsity bowler Emily Cueto became the first Blissfield roller to qualify for the state individual competition.

Cueto posted a total pin fall of 1014 over six games to lock up a spot at the state tournament at Sterling Heights Saturday, March 2.

Here she is in one of her earlier outings of the season at Rich Lanes.

 



Whiteford, Britton Deerfield women advance in districts; Blissfield draws bye

The Britton Deerfield Patriots and Whiteford Bobcats both battled their way into the second round of the district tournament. Whiteford avenged a district defeat to Summerfield from last year and the Patriots sealed a victory over Erie Mason and Cambria Handy broke the 1,000-point barrier.

It was sweet revenge for the Whiteford women’s varsity basketball squad Monday night, Feb. 25. The Lady Bobcats were knocked out of the 2012 district tournament by the Summerfield Bulldogs on Whiteford’s home court. A year later, it’s a different story as the Bobcats bullied the Bulldogs for a 59-35 first-round win.

It was a special night for the Britton Deerfield varsity women’s basketball team Monday night. The Lady Patriots locked up a 50-31 first-round victory in the district tournament over the Erie Mason Eagles, as Cambria Handy scored her 1,000th point in just her junior season.

Men’s basketball: Feb. 18-22

BRITTON DEERFIELD

The Britton Deerfield Patriots basketball team is in the midst of a winning streak they are hoping they can keep riding into the district tournament next week. The Patriots shocked the Addison Panthers Feb. 18 with a one-point win overtime, defeating them 51-50.

The Patriots carried the winning momentum into their victory against improving Tri County Conference foe, Whitmore Lake the following night beating them 61-60 at Deerfield.

BLISSFIELD

A strong third-quarter performance kept the Blissfield men’s varsity basketball squad in reach of the Erie Mason Eagles Tuesday, but the Royals were unable to complete the effort and suffered a 58-52 loss.

Blissfield may have an opportunity at redemption against the Eagles if the two meet in next week’s district tournament. The Royals open up the district tournament against Britton Deerfield at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 4 at Saint Mary’s Catholic Central.

Blissfield bowlers to roll at regionals

The Blissfield bowling team will send six women and five men to the regional bowling tournament at Airport Lanes in East Jackson Friday evening.
Women representing Blissfield are Emily Cueto, Madison Laroy, Abigail Duffy, Haley Street, Angela Woodbury and Erin MacBeth. Cueto had the highest score of the Royal bowlers at the district event in Morenci  last Saturday scoring 705 pins in five games with a high game of 192. Laroy had a score of 693 in five games with a game high 176. Duffy followed with 631 and a game high 138.  Street bowled 624 and had a game high of 138. Woodbury bowled 566 in five games with a game-high 134 and MacBeth bowled 553 with a game high 131.

Thompson to represent BHS wrestling at The Palace

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad took seven contenders to regional competition at Hudson Saturday, but only one advanced to state. Dan Barta and Thomas Jackson both found victory on the day, but were unable to duplicate it and advance on to state competition.

Senior Dylan Thompson was victorious through the first two rounds of competition, before being matched up with 285-pound powerhouse Zach Rieger from host Hudson. He muscled out a 7-6 decision over Homer senior Tyler Prater who entered the tournament with a 35-3 record on the season. The road seemed to get just a little bit rockier for the Royal as his second match was against Gabe Beaubien of Sand Creek who defeated Thompson a week earlier in district competition. Season ends at districts for BHS cheer team

The Blissfield High School competitive cheer team placed seventh overall in district competition at Addison High School, Saturday morning. Michigan Center won the competition among the 13 schools present and qualified for regional berth. Also continuing on from the district is Madison, Vandercook Lake and Hudson.

The Blissfield men’s varsity basketball team was undersized and over matched by a deep and vertically gifted Onsted squad last Friday during the Coming Home celebrations in Blissfield. The Royals fought hard in front of the packed home house, but were unable to keep pace with the Wildcats in the 63-36 loss.

BRITTON DEERFIELD

After soundly defeating the Sand Creek Aggies Tuesday, the Britton Deerfield men’s basketball team lost a close one to league-leader Madison 48-43 in Deerfield Friday evening, Feb. 15.

Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, the Patriots had an easy win over Sand Creek defeating them 54-39 on the road.

Women’s varsity basketball, Feb. 11-15

The Blissfield women’s varsity basketball team made the Coming Home celebrations a little more special Friday night, Feb. 15, as they defeated the rival Onsted Wildcats 57-46. The Lady Royals used the packed house at Blissfield as an opportunity to avenge its 49-36 loss to Onsted Jan. 18.

BRITTON DEERFIELD

DEERFIELD — It was a first for the Britton Deerfield women’s basketball program Friday evening. They were playing for a share of a Tri-County Championship. The Patriots ultimately fell to the Trojans 48-37 but not without a good fight.

The Patriots took a lot of momentum into the Madison game by defeating Sand Creek 75-53.

WHITEFORD

WHITEFORD — After a poor performance on Tuesday, the Lady Bobcats of Whiteford bounced back and played their best game of the season by defeating Clinton 66-36 Friday evening. They lost to Madison Tuesday night, Feb. 12.

The Summerfield Bulldogs may have defeated the visiting Whiteford Bobcats on their visit to their rival’s turf, but it was Colin Lake’s night to shine Jan. 5 as he became just one of nine Whiteford Bobcats to score over 1,000 points in his career. Lake reached that point in the Summerfield game with 1:58 left in the third quarter when he arced a three-point shot from his left side to break the barrier. Lake needed 14 points but scored 22 to place him ninth on the overall scoring list. But with several games left in the season and a whole season ahead of him next year he could easily move up that list very quickly. The Bobcats lost the contest 58-53.

Seven Blissfield wrestlers head to regionals

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad advanced seven of its members to the individual regional meet, following the individual district competition held at Blissfield High School Feb. 9.

Thomas Jackson, Dakota Underwood, Dylan Thompson, Zach Goetz, Luke Smith, Dan Barta and Grant Mitchell all qualified for regional competition.

The Royals suffered a quick exit from the team district tournament at Madison Feb. 6. The Sand Creek Aggies handed Blissfield a 66-12 defeat in the first round, with Jackson securing the lone victory for the Royals, according to Blissfield head coach Andy Ford.



Blissfield Competitive Cheer: Adrian Invitational

The Blissfield varsity competitive cheer squad competed in the Adrian Invitational Saturday, Feb. 9. The Lady Royals finished in fifth place with a combined team score of 650.66. The Royals’ round scores consisted of 200.3 in the first round, 184.06 in the second and 263.3 in the third.



Women’s basketball: Week of Feb. 4-8

The Whiteford Bobcats women’s basketball team had a solid win against the Summerfield Bulldogs 48-33 Feb. 5.

It was a very physical match from beginning to end that the Whiteford women’s basketball team clinched in the fourth quarter against Whitmore Lake, winning 55-37 Feb. 8.

BRITTON DEERFIELD

It was a team effort that put the Britton Deerfield women’s basketball team into a tie for second place in the Tri-County Conference by defeating Clinton 49-38 Tuesday, Feb. 5.

BLISSFIELD

The Blissfield women’s varsity basketball team split a pair of LCAA contests last week, cruising past the Hillsdale Hornets 52-31 Feb. 5 before missed opportunities resulted in a 45-42 loss to the Columbia Central Golden Eagles on Friday, Feb. 8.

Blissfield varsity bowling: Jan. 21-Feb.1

It was the tale of two lanes for the Blissfield men’s and women’s bowling teams Thursday, Jan. 24 as they hosted the Hudson Tigers. The men’s team notched their first win of the season 23-7, while the women were edged by the Lady Tigers 16-14.

The Blissfield women’s bowling team split a pair of contests against Columbia Central and Clinton last week. The Lady Royal rollers defeated the Golden Eagles 25-5 Jan. 29, but were defeated by the Big Reds 29.5-.5 Jan. 31.

The Blissfield men’s squad took to the lanes against some talented competition last week, according to Southwell. The Royals fell to Columbia Central 23-7 Jan. 29 and Clinton 24-6 Jan. 31.

The Blissfield Royals hit the home mat for the final time of the 2012-13 regular season Wednesday, Jan. 23. Blissfield split the meet with Hillsdale and Clinton. The Royals swatted the Hillsdale Hornets 45-30, but were topped by the Big Reds 54-28.

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad withstood the winter weather Saturday, Feb. 2 as members traveled in snowy conditions to compete in the LCAA tournament at Onsted. The Royals took sixth place in the tournament, with Dundee taking the top spot, followed by Hudson in second. Dundee and Hudson combined for 13 of the 14 total tournament champions.


Men’s varsity basketball: Jan. 21-Feb. 1

WHITEFORD — The three-point shot appeared to put the Bobcats over the top as Whiteford’s  men’s basketball team defeated the Morenci Bulldogs 69-62 on the road Jan. 22.

The Whiteford Bobcats men’s basketball team defeated the Britton Deerfield Patriots 69-57 from the freethrow line Friday evening.

BRITTON DEERFIELD — The Britton Deerfield Patriots once again saw a potential victory disappear in the first quarter as Whitmore Lake came from behind to defeat them 51-40 in the waning minutes Jan. 22.

The Britton Deerfield Patriots easily defeated Webberville Wednesday, Jan. 30, in a non-league contest on the road with a score of 48-27.

A sharp-shooting team with an accurate three-point shot defeated the Britton Deerfield Patriots 65-48 Jan. 25.

Women’s varsity basketball: Jan. 21-Feb. 1

BLISSFIELD ROYALS — With the sting of defeat still fresh in their minds, the Blissfield Lady Royals took to the court Tuesday, Jan. 22, for their first contest following a 49-36 loss to the Onsted Wildcats. The Royals’ response to the loss was going to be a key to the success of the remainder of their season, according to head coach Ryan Gilbert. Blissfield responded with a wrath, and the Erie-Mason Eagles were on the receiving end of a 60-18 thrashing. The Royals’ victory was short-lived, however, as they were defeated by the Ida Bluestreaks 39-33 Friday, Jan. 25.

Women’s varsity basketball: Jan. 14-19

The Blissfield women’s varsity basketball squad finally met a foe that burst their perfect-season bubble after the Lady Royals completed a nail-biting fourth quarter comeback against the Britton Deerfield Patriots Tuesday, Jan. 15 to seal the 44-42 victory, their excitement was short-lived, as the Royals suffered their first loss of the season to the LCAA rival Onsted Wildcats Friday 49-36.

The Britton Deerfield women’s basketball team got back into the win column Friday evening with an easy victory over Morenci 39-9.

The Whiteford women’s basketball team went 1-1 last week, trampling Erie-Mason 51-28 Tuesday, Jan. 15, before going on the road and coming up short of a fourth-quarter comeback against Sand Creek 59-50 Friday. The split on the week brings the Lady Bobcats’ record to 7-5 on the season and 4-4 in the TCC.

The Blissfield women’s varsity bowling team split its schedule last week, defeating Pittsford on Tuesday followed by a loss to the Madison Lady Trojans by just five pins. The Lady Royals split their baker games with Pittsford before posting scores of 697 and 645 in match play to clinch the victory. Against the Trojans, Blissfield once again split their baker games before losing in total pins 1364-1359.

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad, finished behind Ida 63-12 and Hudson 69-6 at home Wednesday, Jan. 16. The Royals then took to the road for the Bronson Tournament on Saturday, where they defeated Gull Lake 48-30 before coming up short against South Haven 42-33 and the host Bronson squad 65-12.

Men’s area varsity basketball: Jan. 14-19

A three-point shot at the buzzer by senior Cody Wulf gave the Blissfield Royals a victory over the Britton Deerfield Patriots 49-47. The Patriots let a 10-point lead with less than two and a half minutes left in the contest deteriorate, giving the Royals the opportunity for the comeback victory Jan. 15.

The Royal celebration was cut short, with Blissfield suffering its first loss of the season, 49-36 at Onsted Friday, Jan. 18. The Wildcats’ record now stands at 9-2 and 7-0 in the LCAA.

The Whiteford varsity men’s basketball squad divide a pair of games last week. The Bobcats were defeated by Erie Mason 69-59 Tuesday, Jan. 15, but rebounded to defeat TCC counterpart Sand Creek 64-39 Friday, Jan. 18.

Royal cheer hosts Jamboree

It was a disappointing week for the Blissfield varsity competitive cheer squad. The Royals hosted their annual Blissfield Jamboree on Thursday, Jan. 10, which included Columbia Central, Hudson, Ida and Onsted.

Despite a strong round-three score, Spotts said the squad was unable to overcome their lower scores in rounds one and two. “We finished in last, but I thought our actual performances in the rounds were pretty good. Our round-three score was pretty well up there, but our rounds one and two scores were about average,” Spotts said.

The squad hoped to fine tune its routines when it headed to the Hudson Invitational Saturday, Jan. 12. The competition was deep, according to Spotts, with 30 teams in attendance, including nine squads in Blissfield’s division. Blissfield varsity, JV women still unbeaten

The Blissfield varsity women’s basketball team improved its unblemished record to 9-0 and 5-0 in the LCAA with a 49-28 victory over the visiting Lady Golden Eagles Friday.

The victory was the Royals’ second of the week, as they defeated Hillsdale 52-37 Tuesday, Jan. 8.

The Blissfield women’s junior varsity basketball squad is keeping pace with the varsity team as it matched the varsity with wins over Hillsdale and Columbia Central last week. The Royals defeated Hillsdale 39-10 and Columbia Central 54-24 to extend their season record to 9-0 and 5-0 in the LCAA.

Bobcat women end week on winning note

Things did not look good for the Whiteford women’s basketball team Friday night, Jan. 11. Clinton led 20-4 at the end of the first quarter. But the Bobcats came back and won the contest 48-39 after being tied 35-35 in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Bobcats lost Jan. 8 to the undefeated Madison 54-31 at home. Whiteford was within one point at the end of the first quarter but Madison continually pulled away. The Lady Bobcats are now 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Tri-County Conference.

The Britton Deerfield men’s  basketball team won their first game of the year Tuesday, Jan. 8, downing the Sand Creek Aggies, 52-36.

But the Patriot women, who hadn’t lost a game in the regular season fell to the Lady Aggies, 63-50.

Royals wrestle over holidays

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad was faced with some tough competition at the Grass Lake Tournament Dec. 28, as it was matched up against some powerful programs in Clinton, Stockbridge, Jefferson, Grass Lake and Concord. The Royals went 1-4 on the day with their sole victory coming in the form of a 54-12 domination of Concord. Blissfield fell just short of defeating Grass Lake, coming up three points short as they lost 43-39. The Royals also fell to Jefferson 71-12, Stockbridge 52-22 and Clinton 48-27.

Following the Grass Lake Tournament, the Blissfield grapplers headed to Clinton for the Clinton Invitational for individual competition. The Britton Deerfield Patriots men’s basketball team could not recover from an explosive first quarter Bobcats scoring drive led by Colin Lake who by himself scored as many points as the Britton Deerfield in the contest.

The Blissfield men’s and women’s bowling squads hit the lanes for a holiday tournament at Hudson Dec. 22.

The Royal men finished in 10th place and were unable to advance to the medal round.

The BHS lady rollers finished fourth in team play and advanced to the medal round where they faced off against state-ranked Vandercook Lake and lost in a three-round baker match. The Lady Royals then took on Milan in the consolation finals and fell to the Big Reds by just two pins over the three-game baker match.

The Blissfield women’s varsity basketball team goes into the holiday break 7-0 after defeating Dundee 49-37 Friday, Dec. 21. Claire Denecker put up double-digit points, rebounds and blocks for her first triple-double of the season.

Earlier in the week, they crushed the LCAA rival Hudson Lady Tigers 51-8 Tuesday , Dec. 18.

The squad stands 3-0 in the LCAA.

The Blissfield JV basketball squad posted a 55-28 victory over Hudson.

The highlight of the night for the Lady Royals was their first-ever victory over Hudson since head coach Amber Spotts has taken over the program.

Royal men down Ida for season’s first win

The Blissfield men’s varsity basketball squad members have found themselves confronted with a challenging start to their 2012 season, suffering three straight losses, including a 61-27 loss to Albion Tuesday, Dec. 14.

But the Royals hit the hardwood on Friday night, Dec. 14, looking to right the ship against LCAA rival Ida. Blissfield jumped out to a 32-16 halftime lead that they wouldn’t relinquish as they held on secure their first victory of the season 61-51 over the Bluestreaks.

Royal women bowlers win first outing

The women were victorious, as they rolled their was to a 17-13 victory, while the men were defeated 27-3.

The Blissfield varsity cheer squad had a rocky start to its 2012 campaign, before rallying to a second-place finish at the Onsted Invitational Saturday, Dec. 15, coming just 1.08 points shy of vaulting themselves past the first-place Addison squad.

The Lady Royals had finished sixth out of nine teams at the Grass Lake Invitational Dec. 8, followed by a fifth-place finish at Ida Dec. 12.

The Blissfield Middle School cheer squad also competed in the Onsted Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 15, and defeated Morenci, Addison and Madison to bring home the first-place hardware.

The Britton Deerfield Lady Patriots notched up another win Friday night, extending their win streak to five by defeating the Summerfield Bulldogs easily 68-45.

Despite a little shooting difficulty, their offense once again proved to be too tough to beat. Morgan Tanis had a season-high 18 points to lead the team and Cambria Handy had her second consecutive double-double including 17 points.

The Blissfield varsity wrestling squad opened its season by hosting the largest invitational in school history and finishing one point from a win.

The Royals’ home mat hosted Madison, Manchester, Stockbridge, Memorial, Springport, Lutheran Westland, Vandercook Lake, Roosevelt, Saint Mary’s Catholic Central, Milan, Morenci and Inter City Baptist on Saturday.

The Royals finished in second place for the invitational, posting a team total 151 points. It was a nail-biting finish, as Madison took first place with a team score of 152 and Manchester came in third with 150.

Estes steps down as Blissfield head football coach

After 11 seasons and eight playoff appearances, Blissfield head varsity football coach Ron Estes has decided to step away from the game.

Estes is leaving behind a decorated legacy at Blissfield, that includes a pair of league championships, a district and regional championship, and a state runner up finish in 2007 at Ford Field.

“I needed to step away for a little bit, and felt like the timing was right,” Estes said.

The veteran coach said he has no immediate coaching plans in his future, but added his career as a coach is far from over.

“I’m not done coaching, this is just a temporary thing. But I have absolutely nothing brewing,” he said.

With a 76-40 career record at Blissfield and a 66 percent winning percentage, Estes should have little trouble finding a position when he decides to return.

BD Patriots fall in Division Seven regional

The Britton Deerfield Patriots, coming off a 32-2 District football win against Dansville last week, charged onto the Bishop Foley High School field in Madison Heights with a busload of enthusiasm and heart, but were unable to overtake the number-one Detroit Loyola football team in Division Seven Saturday afternoon.

The Loyola Bull Dogs, 11-0 on the season, prevented the Patriots, 8-3, from getting on the scoreboard, and won the regional title 32-0.

Only three teams of the 12 Loyola has met, however, have held the Bull Dogs to 32 points or fewer this season and BD was one of those teams. Eight of the teams Loyola defeated lost by more than 32 points.
