Dorothy Harmes

Dorothy Bowen Harmes, 85, a lifelong resident of Lenawee County and for the past several years, The Michigan Masonic Home in Alma, died on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Dorothy was born in Adrian to Melville and Cecil (Vogel) Bowen, who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Adrian High School and held a Bachelor and Master Degrees in Education from Siena Heights College (University). She taught school for many years at the former Pratt School, the former Riga Standard School and the former Palmyra School. She was also a homemaker and the mother of four boys. She enjoyed family and socializing and was a member of the Palmyra hobby club and book club for many years. She was also a member of the Palmyra Community Presbyterian Church and a past Worthy Matron of the Palmyra Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Bruce Harmes in 2011; two brothers, Donald and Jerry Bowen and a sister, Evelyn Bilkey. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Britten of Adrian and Las Vegas; four sons, Mike (Sue) of Crystal River, Florida, John (Susan) of Blissfield, Jim (Ruth Anne) of Grand Blanc and Greg of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, as well as three grandsons, three granddaughters, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at the Palmyra Community Presbyterian Church, 6370 Palmyra Rd., Palmyra MI. from 2 to 4 p.m. on November 22, 2013, with a memorial service following. Burial will be at Palmyra Cemetery. The family has requested that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to Mid-Michigan Hospice.
