The Blissfield varsity volleyball team opened the season by placing first in the silver division at Saturday morning’s Jackson County Western Panther Tune-Up Tournament.
The day started slow for the Royals, who went 0-1-2 during pool play with a loss to Hillsdale (16-21, 18-21), a split with Stockbridge (15-21, 21-19) and a split with Manchester (16-21, 21-7).
The Royals were seeded third in the silver division before going on to win it. They defeated Northwest (25-19, 17-25, 15-9), Manchester (25-20, 14-25, 15-10) and Onsted (16-25, 25-21, 15-11).
“It was a great start to our season,” said coach Sandi Porter. “There was improvement from every team member continually throughout the day. We hung tough with a hot day and going three games in each match of the silver division. They bounced back when they got down and never gave up. Kelsey Suiter and Kaytlin Martinez did a super job with line-up changes because of Madison Tracy out with a shoulder injury. Super teamwork!”
Suiter led the Royals in the stat book with 15 kills, two blocks, 20 digs and 40 points served, including six aces. In the first match against Manchester, Suiter served 15 straight points to give the Royals a 15-0 lead.
Laura Goetz had 21 blocks, nine kills and 32 points served, including six aces.
Macy Goetz served for 28 points, including six aces. She also picked up three blocks and 70 assists.
Claire Denecker had nine blocks and 31 kills, and Corrine Domschot hit 28 kills.
