Election date is Nov. 8
RIGA—The effort to bring Riga Township’s recently approved zoning ordinance amendment to a vote was a success. The petition, circulated by pro-wind energy Riga residents, gathered more than twice the number of signatures required to put the issue on the Nov. 8 ballot. The results were certified by the Lenawee County Clerk.
The ordinance in question imposes strict regulations on industrial wind energy development. Developers have said it would absolutely prohibit wind energy facilities in Riga. Those who oppose the ordinance say it would deprive the township of a rare opportunity to expand its tax base. However, the ordinance’s supporters say it simply aims to protect residents from the potential adverse effects of industrial wind turbines. Many local residents have said they want the fate of wind energy in Riga left in the hands of its residents, rather than the board. And on Nov. 8 they will make their choice.
In a special meeting Monday evening, the Riga Township board approved the ballot language. A vote of “Yes” will support the ordinance and its immediate enactment. A vote of “No” will call for the elimination of the ordinance and the drafting of a new one.
The board also voted to extend its moratorium on wind energy development by another 180 days.
