The Britton Deerfield girls varsity volleyball team split two matches and lost two matches at the Summerfield preseason tournament Saturday.
First-year varsity coach Tim O’Brien said the day went pretty well the way he expected it to go with a few surprises as well.
“We started off slow the first match, which was definitely winnable and played well the next two matches but then slowed down again the last match with some fatigue,” O’Brien said.
Britton Deerfield lost to Dundee in the first match 15-18 and 9-18 and came back and split the next match against Summerfield with scores of 18-17 and 16-18. The last two matches of the day were both versus Flat Rock.
BD split the first match with scores of 14-18 and 18-12 but lost both sets in the last match 16-18 and 9-18.
“There were two performers that stood above the rest,” O’Brien said.
Four-year varsity player Sydne McMullen had a good day he said.
But what surprised O’Brien was the help on the floor from the youngest member of the squad.
“To my surprise the second top performer was Janessa Handy. As a freshman she started out very nervous but quickly settled in playing amazing defense and touching balls that not many individuals could.”
