Blissfield High School saw two wrestlers compete in the 2011 MHSAA Individual Wrestling Finals Thursday through Saturday at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Competing in Division 4, heavyweight Christian Davis fell in the first round, while Dalton Goetz placed sixth at 171 pounds.
Davis, 33-19 before the tournament, lost his first bout to Flint Beecher’s Melvin Rawls. He then went on to pin Matt Robinson of Newberry before falling to Jaxon DeHaven of Watervliet.
Goetz, who went into the tournament with a record of 47-4, lost in the first round by a narrow margin to Josh Jensen of Cass City.
Goetz won his next three matches handily. He defeated Andrew Franks of Oscoda 15-4, knocked an Iron Mountain opponent back to the U.P. with a score of 10-2, and trounced a Hudson Tiger 11-5.
The next round would decide who moved on to compete for third place. Goetz faced Juan Aburto of Covert High School. Aburto was able to score a takedown in the first round. Goetz managed to narrow Aburto’s lead to one, until Aburto scored two points with 30 seconds left in the third round. Then Aburto played defense until the final whistle blew. Goetz lost the round 2-5.
In the match for fifth place, Goetz wrestled Wayne Beach of St. Louis. He nearly pinned Beach in the third round, but Beach rolled out just in time to avoid the fall and win the match 4-2.
