Citing a need for a boost in morale, Blissfield Township fire chief Gary Crist asked township officials for a boost in pay for fire department members, citing perhaps an outdated bonus formula that could add to the difficulty in getting fire fighters to answer calls.
Crist discussed changing the bonus part of the fire fighter pay. Now any firefighter who makes 35 percent or more of the total calls for the year gets a $500 bonus.
In a proposal that was written by department member John Kandik, the yearly bonus would be increased to $1,000; however, firefighters would get a percentage of the bonus based on the percentage of the fire calls they made.
The proposal also requested increasing pay for attending required meetings and training from $8.50 to $10 per meeting.
Undr the current structure each fire department member receives $20 per call that is answered and $8.50 for trainings an meetings. They also receive $350 a year for certain levels of training completed.
The township recently approved 2011 wages of $48,085 for fhe fire department at a special meeting on Dec. 5. This amount does not include payroll taxes and other payroll liabilities for which the township is responsible.
