UPDATE: 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011
BLISSFIELD — The National Weather Service reports that the River Raisin has crested at the U.S. 223 bridge at 685.62 feet - the second-highest level since records began being kept. (See link for up-to-date levels of the River Raisin at Blissfield ... http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=dtx&gage=blim4&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1 )
April Wolfe, who has worked at Blissfield Insurance Agency, just east of the bridge, for many years and, along with her colleagues, has observed the rise and fall of the River Raisin through many floods, said that the water was touching the bridge late last night. As of this morning, though, it was just under the bridge. Her daughter, Alexis Wolfe, provided the accompanying photo to illustrate the level this morning (Thursday, Dec. 1). She had also observed the water was down at a point she had been watching at Blissfield Insurance’s building.
Blissfield Community Schools cancelled for the day. Blissfield Village Police were posted on either side of the U.S. 223 bridge to reroute traffic. In offices on either side of the river, people are sharing their routes "across town" which require a large circle taking them almost to Adrian via the south. Success has been reported taking Berkey south to Weston Road then to Ogden Highway and back to U.S. 223 to make it from the east side of Blissfield to Adrian - or even back to the west side of Blissfield.
