BLISSFIELD — Even though the water is receding the River Raisin Bridge on U.S. 223 in Blissfeld will remain closed. Michigan Department of Transportation officials are still unsure when opening the bridge will be possible.
“It depends on Mother Nature and how quicky the water recedes,” MDOT spokesperson Kari Arend said.
As of 2 p.m. Thursday the water was just inches below the bridge. Arend said the water would have to decrease by a couple of feet  most likely before it would be safe for MDOT inspectors to get in and inspect the bridge.
Inspectors will be looking for damage to the underside of the bridge and “anything that might compromise the structural integrity,” Arend said.
“We recognize it is incovenient to have the bridge closed,” she said, “but we have to weigh safety with that.”
Arend would not predict how long the bridge may stay closed especially when weighing the possibility of more precipitation in the coming days.
