Riga Twp. considers ways to handle noise complaints

Some residents near ethanol plant upset by sound

RIGA — At its Nov. 14 monthly meeting, the Riga Township board discussed how to handle noise complaints near the ethanol plant, eliminated the position of constable, heard the fire department’s year-end report and fielded complaints about township road conditions.

Although the ethanol plant has been said to have lowered its noise output, some nearby residents still say it presents a nuisance.
Trustee Paul Dusseau wondered whether the township should file a complaint against the plant.
Planning commission chairman Reg Karg said the Environmental Protection Agency could investigate the noise and determine whether the plant is within regulations. However, Karg said the township had at last established a “dialogue” with the ethanol plant, and taking such steps may put a strain on future communication.
