RIGA — The Riga Township board was caught off guard by a crowd of nearly 300 people that showed up for Thursday night’s special meeting at the Riga Fire Hall. The board had been expected to act on a zoning ordinance regulating industrial wind energy development. However, when more people came than the building could accommodate, the meeting was called off.
In anticipation of a large audience, Riga Fire Chief Chris Colter had ordered fire department personnel to distribute a total of 200 tickets to attendees as they came through the doors. Once tickets ran out, no more people were to be admitted.
“The capacity of the fire hall is 200,” said Colter. “If there were a medical emergency in a room full of 500 people ... that creates a hazard in itself. Our first responsibility is the life and safety of the people, no matter who they are or where they come from.”
The meeting has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday (tonight) in the Blissfield American Legion.
