GIRLS BASKETBALL Feb. 25, 2011, edition

BLISSFIELD-CLINTON, Feb. 14
The Lady Royals suffered a defeat on their home court from Clinton on Monday, Feb. 14 with a final score of 48-44.
Clinton was strong right from the get-go and ended the first half with 28 points compared to BHS’s 18. Although the Lady Royals outscored Clinton in the second half, the Redskins’ strong start secured their win for the night.

BLISSFIELD-DUNDEE, Feb. 17
The Blissfield varsity girls basketball team hosted the Dundee Vikings Thursday evening. The game initially looked like a “gimme” for the Royals, but after the Vikings nearly staged a late-game comeback, the Royals just managed to pull of a 54-51 win.
Celia Coopshaw was the top scorer and led the way with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Taylor Jacob had 11 points, five assists and two steals. Jamie Friess put up 11 points.

BLISSFIELD-HUDSON, Feb. 18
When the Lady Royals faced Hudson on Friday, they started with a commanding first quarter with a 19-5 lead they wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the night. BHS tallied their second win for the week with a final score of 56-42.
Those players were Celia Coopshaw  with 14 points, Megan Knierim with 10, and Mackenzie Madsen also with 10.

WHITEFORD-ERIE MASON, Feb. 15
The Whiteford Lady Bobcats shook off an extremely slow start to get their 11th win of the season with a 41-37 victory at Greenhills on Tuesday, Feb. 15.
Cheyanne McCartney led all scorers with 10 points, including two free throws with one second left to seal the victory, and led the team with four assists and four blocks.
Brittni Collins also had a huge basket in the final minute as she added seven points, all in the second half. Becky Worden had seven points and four steals and Mariah Dupree had six points. Also that night, Megan Ortmann had 10 rebounds and four blocks.

WHITEFORD-SUMMERFIELD, Feb. 18
Bound and determined to have another victory for the week, the Lady Bobcats faced Morenci in an away game on Friday, Feb. 18. Although Whiteford’s momentum helped sustain them for the entire game, they lost, coming up one point short at 55-54.
Cheyanne McCartney led all scorers with 15 points to go along with five assists. Becky Worden added 12 points and Megan Ortmann had nine. Bethany Wingate had 10 rebounds to lead the Bobcats.

BRITTON DEERFIELD-SUMMERFIELD, Feb. 18
The Summerfield JV team wouldn’t let up from that point forward. The second quarter ended at 17-10, the third sat at 23-17, and the fourth and final quarter ended in the Bulldogs’ favor at 35-21.
With Edison workers still at work outside, and firefighters diverting traffic away from the high school, the BD varsity team took the court at 7:30 that evening. Like their JV counterparts, the first quarter was a low-scorer for both teams, ending at 8-3 in Summerfield’s favor.
In the second quarter, the Patriots rallied to try and cut the Bulldogs’ lead. Breanna Tanner sank a three-pointer and Kayli Bangerter sank a two, bringing the Patriots within three points of Summerfield. But the Bulldogs poured it on and went from a 13-10 score to a 18-10 score in a matter of seconds.
Later on, Bangerter made a difficult two-pointer while having triple coverage on her, and not long after that, drew a foul and sank both free throws. But still, BD trailed, and the second quarter ended at 24-15.
During half time, Edison cut the power to the school so they could fully repair the downed line. Visitors sat in the dark for a few seconds and then the generator kicked in. Dim light bathed the gym for a half hour.
Although the Patriots played stronger in the second half than they did in the first, Summerfield’s lead was secure. The Bulldogs shut down the Patriots with a 53-44 victory.
