Farmers review harvest 2011

‘Year of extremes’
While most of the crops are in, rains forced farmers to leave some crops in the fields.

During the 2011 growing season, big crop farmers worried a sopping-wet spring and a scorching summer would put a big dent in their yields. Yet corn and soybean crops fared better than most had expected. With an average yield and high grain prices, most local farmers are pleased with this year’s harvest.

“It was a year of extremes,” says Howard Keinath, who farms roughly 250 acres in Deerfield Township. “All things considered, it was a pretty good year.”
